Diagnosis. Small to medium-sized (4.0-7.0 mm) fungus gnats. Head and eyes small; antennae occasionally with long hairs, mouthparts not elongated. Thorax hump-backed, small; wings with or without distinct stigma, marking on cross vein r-m present or absent; subcosta ending in costa, media connected with cubital vein by cross-vein well basal of cross-vein r-m, radial sector with three branches; legs sometimes with swollen segments in the female fore tarsus. Abdomen long and narrow.
Biology. Larvae of all species that were reared have been found in soft fruiting bodies of fungi.

The subdivision in subgenera is probably artificial and based on a convenient character in wing venation without other accompanying morphological characters (see Hutson et al., 1980: 26). For the moment the subdivision is maintained in agreement with other recent catalogues.

The source of the record by Plassmann (1988: 194) is not clear. Possibly he included the species because he considered the Dutch records of saundersi to be misidentifications sensu Edwards, 1913. This will need to be verified.
