Diagnosis. Small to medium-sized (3.0-10 mm) flies; body colour ranging from partly yellow and dark to entirely dark, sometimes greyish or metallic. Head often with few well-developed setae on frons but its surface often covered with setulae; vibrissae absent; antennae with somewhat elongated to strongly elongated first flagellomere, its apex rounded to pointed. Wing membrane usually with pattern of fasciae or markings, rarely hyaline; C without breaks; cup with short posterior extension.
Biology. Little is known about the biology of most species. Seioptera vibrans and Physiphora alceae were reared from varying kinds of rotting vegetable matter. The larva of Myennis octopunctata was found behind the bark of dead trees. The larva of Ceroxys urticae was found in manure and rotting vegetation.
