Diagnosis. Minute to small flies (about 1.0-4.0 mm); body generally greyish or silvery, often with pale brownish or black markings on thorax and or abdomen, sometimes on head. Head broad, rounded to somewhat flattened dorsally; antennae small; setae on frons distinct to almost absent. Thorax narrow and slightly arched to short and arched; anepisternum usually bare; katepimeron with one strong seta and sometimes with additional smaller setae. Legs short; usually without strong setae; dorsal preapical setae on tibiae absent. Abdomen short and somewhat arched to long and rather straight.
Biology. Larvae are mostly predators on adelgids, aphids, coccids and scale insects. Some are effective as biological control agents and have been introduced as such. Adults are commonly found in lower to higher grassy vegetation and near sites suitable for oviposition.
