FAMILY AGROMYZIDAE
Paul L.Th. Beuk Version date: 24-12-2022 13:37

Agromyza ferruginosa Van der Wulp, 1871
Diagnosis. Minute to small (< 1.0-5.0 mm) acalyptrate flies; body ranging from almost completely yellow to blackish or rather metallic green. Head with short antennae, first two segments short but third sometimes elongated or even pointed, arista never plumose; frons usually with at least one incurved orbital seta; postocellar setae divergent; genae narrow to broad; vibrissae present. Thorax rectangular and somewhat arched; mesonotum usually with well-developed acrostichal and dorsocentral setae; usually two notopleural and two pairs of scutellar setae. Wing membrane hyaline; C ending at apex of R4+5 or M1+2 with subcostal break only; crossvein dm-cu absent or present; anal vein not reaching wing margin. Legs short; tibiae without dorsal preapical setae. Abdomen with six visible segments; last segment in female formed as tube-like oviposior sheath.

Biology. The larvae of all species a miners of some sort, usually living in the parenchyma of angiosperms. The mines usually are in leaves and stems, but seeds and roots are also attacked. Rarely woody plants are attacked (stems and twigs), sometimes resulting in gall formation. The shape of the mine often has diagnostic value. Most species are monophagous or oligophagous, few species are polyphagous. Especially the latter may be of economic importance as they can be harmful to crops. Adults can be found in the vegetation, on leaves, etc.

Notes
Note 1 Occurrence in the Netherlands confirmed by Ellis (2005e).
Note 2 Material examined: GELDERLAND: Hemmen (ruïne, 3 [m][m]: 19.viii.1992, leg. P.L.Th. Beuk [BEUK]); ZUID-HOLLAND: Voorschoten (Ter Wadding, 1 [f]: 1.v.1993, leg. P.L.Th. Beuk [RMNH]), det. P.L.Th. Beuk.
Note 3 Occurrence in the Netherlands confirmed by Ellis (2006c).
Note 4 Again added by Černý & Van Zuijlen (font color=red>2022: 84).
Note 5 De Meijere (1924:252 erroneously attributed the species Melanagromyza cunctata to Meigen. Beuk (2002s: 261) wrongly interpreted this as a incorrect spelling for Melanagromyza cunctans Meigen and included this species on the list without further justification.
Note 6 Material examined: NOORD-HOLLAND: Egmond-Binnen (Noordhollands Duinreservaat, Vennewater [GPS: 52.5893N, 4.6438E]: 1 [m], 2 [f], 13.viii.2022, leg. A. Lamberts & A. Wijker [NHMM ALC]).
Note 7 This species was formally deleted by Ellis (2008a). Beuk (2002s) had already refered part of the material recorded by previous authors to C. (P.) phragmitidis, but Ellis still had not found any reliable records for the true C. (P.) atra. In the mean time it has been recorded from the Netherlands again by Von Tschirnhaus & Van Wielink (2020: 361).
Note 8 Beuk (2002s) had refered already some of the earlier records of C. (P.) atra as misidentifications to C. (P.) phragmitidis, according to Ellis (2008a), however, there are no reliable records for the true C. (P.) atra. Thus the species is now listed as misidentification without 'pro parte'.
Note 9 Beuk (2002s) erroneously excluded this species because he placed xylostei Robineau-Desvoidy sensu Hendel as synonym of Aulagromyza luteoscutellata.
Note 10 Authorship incorrectly given as De Meijere, 1924 by Beuk (2002s: 263).
Note 11 The year of description of this species was erroneously given as 1943 in the printed version (Beuk, 2002s).
Note 12 In the original printed version (Beuk, 2002s) this names was erroneously formated as valid name without the approprioate note of the misidentification. The error was first noted here. The wrong formatting made it appear as valid name in the wrong position but the species was not included in the species count at the time.
Note 13 The correct name of the species described by Malloch is L. longispinosa [= L. pacifica (Melander, 1913)].
Note 14 This species was erroneously omitted from the original printed version (Beuk, 2002s).
Note 15 Material examined: GELDERLAND: Beek-Ubbergen (Goudenregenstraat [GPS: 51.82N, 5.93E], 1 [m]: 28.iv.2021, leg. J. Kühnen [NHMM ALC]).
Note 16 Ellis (2005l) refers to material recorded by De Meijere (1925) without indicating that Hering (1957 concluded that De Meijere's 1925 interpretation of L. pusio in fact referred to pisivora. The true pusio was described by De Meijere as graminicola.
Note 17 De Meijere (1925: 284) recorded this species as fasciola subsp. bellidis Kaltenbach and gave a full description. However, this is not the same species as A. bellidis Kaltenbach (= Calycomyza humeralis (von Roser, 1840)), which was also recorded by De Meijere (1924: 123) as Dizygomyza bellidis Kaltenbach.
The year of description of this species was erroneously given as 1924 in the printed version (Beuk, 2002s).
Note 18 Year of description incorrectly given as 1925 by Beuk (2002s: 263).
Note 19 Year of description incorrectly given as 1881 by Beuk (2002s: 264).
Note 20 Liriomyza ornata as listed by De Meijere was erroneously interpreted as Metopomyza ornata by Beuk in the original checklist. It was correctly listed by Ellis & Koster (2003) as Phytoliriomyza ornata.
Note 21 Again added as Phytomyza albipennis by Von Tschirnhaus & Van Wielink (2020: 361) and Mol et al. (2020:131), when it was still included in the list as a species of Napomyza.
Note 22 Year of description incorrectly given as 1862 by Beuk (2002s: 264).
Note 23 Year of description incorrectly given as 1881 by Beuk (2002s: 265).
Note 24 Again added by Von Tschirnhaus & Van Wielink (2020: 361) and Mol et al. (2020:132).
Note 25 Year of description incorrectly given as 1924 by Beuk (2002s: 265).
Note 26 Again added by Velterop et al. (2007: 130).
Note 27 Year of description incorrectly given as 1935 by Beuk (2002s: 265).
Note 28 Authorship incorrectly given as Hering, 1924 by Mol et al. (2020:132).
Note 29 Authorship incorrectly given as Fallén, 1823 by Beuk (2002s: 265).
Note 30 Misidentification pointed out by Ellis (2005c).
Note 31 Authorship of this species is often wrongly accredited to Goureau (1851) (see Spencer & Martinez, 1987: 263).
Note 32 Material recorded by Ellis (2005i) 'probably' belongs to this species.
Note 33 The exact status of this species is unknown. According to De Meijere (1924: 154) the material of this species consisted of C. (D.) morosa and C. (P.) atra.
Note 34 This species was recorded by Van der Wulp (1871: 203) but never mentioned since, neither as valid species, nor as synonym or misidentification. It is now considered as nomen dubium (see Papp, 1984b: 343).
Note 35 Ellis (2008c) could not determine De Meijere's interpretation of this species on which the previous inclusion on the Dutch checklist was based. De Meijere himself (1924; 1939b) considered it as senior synonym of 'Agromyza riparia Van der Wulp, 1871' but the true identity of Van der Wulp's species has not been established either. For that reason, this species is now listed as doubtful.
Note 36 De Meijere (1924: 126; 1926: 241) recorded P. albiceps from several hosts that are not attacked by this species. Until material can be checked the identification is considered doubtful.
Note 37 This species was recorded as analis by Van der Wulp (1871: 203) but never mentioned since, neither as valid species, nor as synonym or misidentification.
Note 38 This species was recorded by De Meijere (1937: 232) but never recorded since. It is now considered as nomen dubium (see Spencer & Martinez, 1987: 264).
Note 39 De Meijere (1935: 214) deleted this species from the Dutch list after an erroneous record by Hendel (1931-1936: 120).
Note 40 The record by Černý et al. (2020) was an error (M. Černý, personal communication 02/02/2022).
Note 41 Recorded from the Netherlands by Hendel (1931-1936: 291) but deleted by De Meijere (1935: 217) because Hendel's record was based on a misinterpretation of De Meijere's publications.
Note 42 This species is listed as doubtful by Griffiths (1976: 263).
Note 43 Beuk (2002s) included the species by error es noted by Ellis (2008e). It had been incorrectly marked on a list of non-indigenous species described without clear reference to a type locality by De Meijere (1926).
Note 44 Deleted as from the list by De Meijere (1935: 216) after a doubtful record from the Netherlands by Hendel (1931-1936: 85).
Note 45 In 2004 Ellis attributed a number of mines to this species but now concludes they more likely belong to P. ptarmicae (Ellis, 2007d).
