Diagnosis. Small (1.6-4.0 mm), yellowish to brownish pruinose flies, related to Ephydridae. Head large with small antennae; frons with three to five pairs of lateroclinate orbital setae (one pair of reclinate orbital setae in Pelomyiella) and numerous frontal setae; postocellar setae absent. Thorax with at least four pairs of dorsocentral setae; acrostichal setae strong or hair-like. Wing membrane clear; costa with subcostal break only; R with three branches; M unforked; anal vein short or vestigial. Legs short and with many short hair-like setae (Canacinae) or with somewhat swollen femora that bear some stronger setae (Pelomyiinae and Tethininae), and strong apical spurs on mid and hind tibiae. Abdomen subcylindrical.
Biology. Dutch species are found in the intertidal zones or found near seashores. Adults of Pelomyiinae and Tethininae have been reported to visit flowers but are generally swept from low vegetation. Little is known about the immature stages but larvae of Canacinae probably feed on algae.
