FAMILY ANTHOMYIIDAE
Paul L.Th. Beuk, H. Joop Prijs and Herman de Jong Version date: 08-09-2024 18:37

Diagnosis. Small to medium-sized slender calyptrate flies, mostly greyish, some partly yellowish; body length 2-13 mm. Hypopleuron without a row of bristles. Anal vein (A1) reaching wing margin at least as a fold. Ventral surface of scutellum in most species with fine hairs. Male genitalia and chaetotaxy are very important in taxonomy.

Biology. Larvae mostly phytophagous, some are saprophagous or fungivorous while others are parasitic in insects. Fucellia larvae in decaying marine plants on the seashore. Several phytophagous species of economic importance. Adults feeding on flowers, tree wounds, carrion, dung and rotting plants.

General references. Dely-Draskovits (1993 [catalogue]), Hennig (1966-1976 [keys]), Griffiths (1982-2001 [keys, classification, Nearctic]), Huckett (1987 [general, key to genera]), Michelsen (2015[Pegomya fulgens, furva and tabida species groups]), Suwa & Darvas (1998 [general, key to genera]).

Notes
Note 1 According to Ackland (pers. comm.) this species is easily confused with A. confuseana Michelsen, 1985, which probably also occurs in the Netherlands but has not yet been recorded.
Note 2 Both B. trapezina and B. varicolor were listed as valid species by De Meijere (1920a: 184) but later (De Meijere, 1928a: 80; 1939b: 170) he listed B. varicolor as synonym of B. trapezina. However, most authors (e.g., Chandler, 1998a: 165) follow Michelsen (1985) and consider them to be separate species. Material will need to be checked to confirm the occurrence of both species.
Note 3 According to Ackland (pers. comm.) this species is easily confused with F. tergina (Zetterstedt, 1845), which probably also occurs in the Netherlands but has not yet been recorded.
Note 4 Gritffiths (1982-2001) considers Hylemyza to be a subgenus of Hylemya.
Note 5 Misidentification pointed out by Hering (1957).
Note 6 Before official publication this species was already recorded here: http://www.dipter...d_id=37288
Note 7 Until recently, D. brunnescens and D. cardui were often confused (Ackland, pers. comm.). References in the literature to one species may well refer to the other.
Note 8 Van der Wulp & De Meijere (1898: 100) recorded Hylemyia cinerella (Meigen, 1826) and De Meijere (1928a: 65) referred part of this material to Delia criniventris Zetterstedt. Zetterstedt described two species in 1860 that are now placed in Delia. The first is the valid Delia criniventris (Zetterstedt, 1860), the second is a junior secondary homonym of this species, which is now known under the name Delia penicillaris (Rondani, 1866). It is unlikely that the latter species occurs in the Netherlands (Ackland, pers. comm.).
Note 9 Again added by Theowald (1952d: 131).
Note 10 There are three other species that may reside under this name that could all occur in the Netherlands (Ackland, pers. comm.). These species are H. nominabilis (Collin, 1947), H. obscurus (Macquart, 1835) [= denigratus (Zetterstedt, 1845)] and H. piliferus (Zetterstedt, 1845).
Note 11 Material of this species is present at ZMAN, det. P.L.Th. Beuk.
Note 12 This species was considered to be a synonym of P. genitalis (e.g., Dely-Draskovits (1993: 93) but was shown to be a separate species by Ackland (1993: 213). At least some of the material identified as P. unipila at the ZMAN indeed did belong to that species.
Note 13 Van der Wulp (1864a: 183) and Van der Wulp & De Meijere (1898: 101) recorded Anthomyza humerella Zetterstedt, 1838. De Meijere (1928a: 65) referred these records to B. dissecta and P. sulciventris (= aestiva) without specifying which material belonged to which species. The occurrence of B. dissecta is doubtful and records could well refer to Pegoplata infirma (see Chandler, 1998a: 168).
Note 14 The species belonging to the P. hyoscyami complex resemble each other very much and there have been many misidentification (Ackland, pers. comm.). Material will need to be checked and occurrence in the Netherlands of each species needs to be confirmed.
Note 15 No other records for this species are available and the record presumed to be be erroneous.
Note 16 This species was mentioned in a review of the Dutch Muscidae s.l. It resembles D. brassicae (= D. radicum) but lacks the hairs at the base of the hind femora. The larvae were found in Brassica spec. Kabos only knew the species from Belgium and the Netherlands.
