FAMILY SCATHOPHAGIDAE
Herman de Jong and Paul L.Th. Beuk Version date: 20-10-2024 17:42

Scathophagidae
Diagnosis. Small to medium sized, slender flies. Dull yellowish brown or dull grey, to shining black or yellow, sometimes bicolorous. Often with strong setae, sometimes with dense cover of fine erect hairs. Eyes widely separate in both sexes. No interfrontal setae. Postgenae usually with long pale hairs.

Biology. Larvae of most species phytophagous, either as leafminers, stem-borers, living in flower heads, in flowers or in seed capsules. Larvae of other species in heaps of seaweed, vegetable detritus, sewage beds, nests of coot (Fulica atra Linnaeus), in peat, in dung, or predatory on eggs of aquatic insects. Adults probably all predacious on soft bodied insects. Some species attracted in considerable numbers to dung. Males ofScathophaga stercoraria aggregating on cow pads.

General references. H. de Jong (1985 [Norellia], 2000a [general, key to genera]), Vockeroth (1987e [general, key to genera, Nearctic]).

References to the local fauna. H. de Jong (1985, 1996, 2000c), Kabos (1954b), Mortelmans & Devillers (2014), Oosterbroek (1973), Van der Wulp (1871).

Remarks. Original data by De Jong, corrections and updates (publication years marked in red) by Beuk.

Notes
Note 1 Nomenclature follows Michelsen (2001).
Note 2 The synonymy of A. leucochaetum and N. inermis was established by H. de Jong (2000c: 151).
Note 3 The synonymy of S. semiatra and S. furcata was established by H. de Jong (2000c: 153).
Note 4 True identity of Musca suillia was established by Michelsen & O'Hara (2014).
Note 5 Van der Wulp (1871: 186) described this species based on material originating from Breda. The type appears to be lost and as no other material is known that corresponds with Van der Wulp's description it remains unclear which species actually is involved (H. de Jong, 2000c: 149).
