FAMILY TRICHOCERIDAE
Ewa Krzeminska and Paul L.Th. Beuk Version date: 15-03-2016 17:16

Diagnosis. Small to medium-sized (3.0-9.0 mm) nematocerous flies; females usually larger than males. Head with three ocelli; antennae composed of 16 simple, cylindrical to oval flagellomeres. Wings with characteristic second anal vein of 1/5-1/4 the wing length; venation consistent throughout the family. Females with ovipositor more or less curved downwards. Males with gonocoxites ventrally connected by a bridge, fused or separated medially.

Biology. Of two European genera, Trichocera is confined to cool climate and adults appear from autumn to spring, throughout the winter; especially females are found walking on snow. Adults of Diazosma occur only in summer. Males are characteristic by their bouncing flight and often form swarms. The larvae are terrestrial and live in moist soil, decaying plants, mushrooms, animal droppings. The last instars spend the summer in diapause.

General references. Alexander (1981a [general]), Dahl (1966, 1967 [keys]), Dahl & Alexander (1976 [world catalogue]), Dahl & Krzeminska (1997 [characteristics, classification]), Starý (1998 [redefinition of Metatrichocera]).

References to the local fauna. Doorman (1962), Kabos (1953), Krzeminska (1996, 1999).

Remarks. The number of species in the world is from unpublished data by Krzeminska.
