FAMILY CHIRONOMIDAE
Paul L.Th. Beuk Version date: 29-05-2024 10:25

Chironomus sp.
Diagnosis. Very small to medium-sized (1.0-10.0 mm) nematocerous flies. Head without biting mouth parts; ocelli absent; male antennae plumose, female antennae pilose. Thorax arched. Wings with anterior veins more strongly developed than posterior ones; radial sector usually extending almost to wing tip; M not forked. Legs slender, fore legs often lifted up in rest. Abdomen slender.

Biology. Larvae aquatic, in wet habitats or terrestrial in rich organic soils to rather dry and even rather sandy soils. Most larvae are microphagous and feed on detritus and plankton. Some (Tanypodinae and some others) are carnivorous.

Notes
Note 1 Not listed by Klink & Moller Pillot (1996).
Note 2 Again added as halophilus by Krebs (1981: 11).
Note 3 According to Chandler (1998a: 58, 68) this is actually a misidentification. Revision of species considered to be junior synonyms should establish which name is the valid name for this species.
Note 4 Not listed by Klink & Moller Pillot (1996). According to Moller Pillot (2009b: 12) older records should be considered doubtful but recent material confirms the species as Dutch.
Note 5 Vallenduuk et al. (1999: 30) do not list the Netherlands in its area of distribution.
Chironomus uliginosus Keyl was shown to be a junior primary homonym of Chironomus uliginosus Meunier, 1904 by Ashe & O'Connor (2014: 231).
Note 6 Again recorded as objectans by Van Kleef & Esselink (2004: 24).
Note 7 Again added as recent rather than subfossil species by Kuper & Van Kleef (2023: 23).
Note 8 The name mauricii was proposed by Kruseman (1933: 195) as a new name for Cryptochironomus littorellus Goetghebuer, 1931 when placed in the same genus as Chironomus littorellus Meigen, 1818. The latter is considered as nomen dubium in Chironominae by Ashe & Cranston (1990: 353). Although these species are now in different genera, Goetghebuer's name is considered invalid because its was replaced before 1961 and has not been used since.
Note 9 Again added as breviantennatum by Moller Pillot (1978-1979: IV.11.12). Moller Pillot (1978-1979: IV.11.12; 1984a: 158) and Klink & Moller Pillot (1996: 16) treat breviantennatum (in the larval stage) as a valid species distinct from scalaenum even though reared larvae of this type yielded scalaenum adults. Therefore, this list adopts the synonymy of breviantennatum with scalaenum as given by Ashe & Cranston (1990: 307).
Note 10 Systematic position following Grodhaus (1987: 208).
Note 11 First recorded by Kruseman (1935b: lxii) and later by De Meijere (1935: 200). Again added by De Meijere (1950a: 6) because of the omission from the 1939 list.
Note 12 This species was listed with incorrectly spelled name by Moller Pillot & Beuk (2002: 115).
Note 13 First recorded by De Meijere (1935: 200). Again added by De Meijere (1950a: 6) because of the omission from the 1939 list.
Note 14 First recorded by Giltay (1934: 299). Again added by Klink (1982b: 36).
Note 15 M. praecox was listed in synonymy with this species by Mol (1984: 88). Possibly this indicates that material previously recorded under the name praecox was misidentified.
Note 16 Misidentification pointed out by Stur & Ekrem (2006: 201).
Note 17 First recorded by De Meijere (1935: 200). Again added by De Meijere (1950a: 5) because of the omission from the 1939 list. Not listed by Klink & Moller Pillot (1996).
Note 18 The species fusca was described on the basis of a female but this female has not yet been associated with pre-adult stages. Consequently, Stur & Ekrem (2006: 213) chose to use the name roseiventris since this is commonly recognised.
Note 19 First as nigrofasciatus recorded by De Meijere (1935: 200). Again added by De Meijere (1950a: 6) because of the omission from the 1939 list.
Note 20 Again added by De Meijere (1950a: 6) because of the omission from the 1939 list.
Note 21 First recorded as curticornis by Kruseman (1935a: xxxix) and later listed by De Meijere (1935: 200). Again added by De Meijere (1950a: 5) because of the omission from the 1939 list.
Note 22 First recorded as samboni by De Meijere (1935: 200). Again added by De Meijere (1950a: 6) because of the omission from the 1939 list.
Note 23 First recorded by De Meijere (1935: 200). Again added by De Meijere (1950a: 5) because of the omission from the 1939 list.
Note 24 First recorded as giltayi by Goetghebuer (1934: 291) and later recorded by Giltay (1934: 300), Kruseman (1935a: xxxix, xl) and De Meijere (1935: 200). Again added by De Meijere (1950a: 6) because of the omission from the 1939 list.
Note 25 Again added as macrosandalum by De Meijere (1950a: 6).
Note 26 First recorded as holochloris (incorrect spelling) by De Meijere (1935: 200). Again added by De Meijere (1950a: 6) because of the omission from the 1939 list.
Note 27 Again added as ’silvaticus Edwards’ by De Meijere (1950a: 6) because of the omission from the 1939 list.
Note 28 The synonymy was established by Ekrem (20042011).
Note 29 First recorded as ? arduennensis by Kruseman (1935a: xxxix) and later listed by De Meijere (1935: 200). Again added by De Meijere (1950a: 5) because of the omission from the 1939 list. Not listed by Klink & Moller Pillot (1996).
Note 30 The synonymy of Lindebergia with Allocladius was established by Ferrington & Sæther (2011).
Note 31 This species was earlier listed as Dutch by Mol (1984: 91) but this was based on a misinterpretation of Moller Pillot (1984b: 148, 149). Current systematic position after Ferrington Jr & Sæther (2011).
Note 32 Previously recorded material of B. vernalis turned out to belong to B. subvernalis. The true B. vernalis has now also been found and is recorded here from the Netherlands for the first time.
Note 33 Klink (pers. comm. in Mol, 1984: 85) indicated that immature stages identified as C. capucinus only yielded adults of fuscus. The record by Ashe & Cranston (1990: 163) is thus based on a misidentification.
Note 34 Again added by Moller Pillot (1999: 89).
Note 35 C. unifasciatus was recorded by Dutch authors and De Meijere (1939b: 146) already listed C. albiforceps as possible synonym. Davids et al. (1980: 253) first used the name albiforceps for the Dutch species.
Note 36 According to Moller Pillot (2009b) similis could be a small form of trifascia.
Note 37 Reduced from genus by Cranston & Krosch (2015: 724).
Note 38 Spies & Sæther (2004: 11) pointed out that Potthast’s description of the immature stage(s) preceded Kieffer’s description of the adult(s).
Note 39 This species was listed as doubtful species in the original checklist (Moller Pillot & Beuk, 2002) because at the time no authority of the species was given, but the correct identity has meanwhile been established. Systematic position after Ferrington Jr & Sæther (2011).
Note 40 Systematic position after Ferrington Jr & Sæther (2011).
Note 41 Not listed by Klink & Moller Pillot (1996). Systematic position after Ferrington Jr & Sæther (2011).
Note 42 Following Saether (1989, 1995), adults previoulsy recorded as M. hirticollis belong to M. eurynotus. Pre-adult material indicates that possibly another species may be involved. For the time being the species is listed as eurynotus.
Note 43 According to Cuppen (2009: 9) material pertaining to the first record needs to be confirmed but the species has been found elsewhere in the Netherlands.
Note 44 Traditionally this species was placed in Orthocladius s.str. but Moller Pillot (1984b: 65) and Klink & Moller Pillot (1996: 12) placed it in Cricotopus. Recently it was asigned to Orthocladius (Symposiocladius).
Note 45 Spies & Sæther (2004: 11) pointed out that Potthast’s description of the immature stage(s) preceded Kieffer's description of the adult(s).
Note 46 Not listed by Klink & Moller Pillot (1996). Generic placement after Sæther & Ferrington Jr (2002, 2003).
Note 47 Though previously listed as misidentification, Sæther & Ferrington Jr (2002, 2003) pointed out the synonymy.
Note 48 This species closely resembles S. nudipennis and may well turn out to be synonymous with that species.
Note 49 This species was not included in Moller Pillot & Beuk (2002) because at the time it was only recorded under the name flaviforceps agg. It was listed under the valid name by Moller Pillot 2009b: 13).
Note 50 This species was recorded from the Netherlands for the first time in the printed version of the checklist and the CD-ROM and at about the same time by Verberk (2002: 1). Later it was formally added by Verberk et al. (2003: 40).
Note 51 Spies & Sæther (2004: 14) clarify the confusion caused by the erroneous listing in Ashe & Cranston (1990) of a non-existing species Chironomus punctatus Meigen, 1804 as type species of Natarsia.
Note 52 Again added by Klink (1982a: 78).
Note 53 Generic systematics following Da SIlva & Ekrem (2016).
Note 54 Even though Chironomus cingulatus Walker, 1856 is a junior primary homonym of C. cingulatus Meigen, 1830, the two homonyms have not been placed in the same genus by any author after 1899. According to the rules of the ICZN, replacing a name under such circumstances is prohibited without applying for a decision by the ICZN. Walker's name must thus be considered valid (see Spies & Sæther, 2004: 14).
Note 55 Considered to be a doubtfull species by Ashe & Cranston (1990) but still listed by Klink & Moller Pillot (1996).
Note 56 All material recorded by Kruseman (1933: 200) belonged to Microchironomus deribae. No recent material of this species is available and the occurrence of this species in the Netherlands is doubtful.
Note 57 The earlier record is considered doubtful by Cuppen et al. (2015) because the recorded habitat seems to be inconsistent with the known habitat for this species.
Note 58 Not listed by Klink & Moller Pillot (1996). In addition, Moller Pillot 2009b: 13) states that the earlier listing by Moller Pillot & Beuk (2002) is erroneous but he gives no explanation why the original record of 1984 should be stricken.
Note 59 First recorded by De Meijere (1935: 200). Again added by De Meijere (1950a: 6) because of the omission from the 1939 list. Considered to be a nomen dubium by Ashe & Cranston (1990: 348).
Note 60 This species was listed as Dutch by Ashe & Cranston (1990: 214) but this was probably the result of a misinterpretation of Moller Pillot (1984b: 131) who stated that there were no certain records for this species yet. Neither was this species listed by Klink & Moller Pillot (1996).
Note 61 According to Moller Pillot (2009b: 13) the record was based on a misidentification.
