FAMILY HYBOTIDAE
Paul L.Th. Beuk and Volkert S. van der Goot Version date: 30-03-2022 16:09

Diagnosis. Very small to small (1.0-6.0 mm, rarely larger) flies. Head with relatively large eyes, median margin of eyes concave at level of antennae; antennae short or with elongate third segment; mouth parts short to elongate, when elongate projecting forwards to downwards. Thorax arched. Wings with radial sector originating distal of humeral cross vein, R4+5 not forked; basal cells relatively large; discal cell either present or absent. Fore and mid legs often long and slender but either or both raptorial in most Tachydromiinae; hind femora often swollen; tibiae often with spur and with rows of short spins when raptorial. Abdomen short and tapering to longer and blunt-tipped; male genitalia asymmetrical and rotated.

Biology. Most species are found to be predators, either hunting in flight (most Ocydromiinae, some Tachydromiinae) or on the surface (other Tachydromiinae); some species are flower visitors (Euthyneura). The mode of life is often reflected in where the adults are collected. Swarming has been observed in the Ocydromiinae. Larval biology is generally poorly known. Larvae are presumed to be predacious and to live in the soil or decaying vegetable matter and dung. Ocydromia glabricula is viviparous.

Deleted species

  Platypalpus Macquart, 1827
  fasciatus (Meigen, 1822)   Note 6
  flavipes (Fabricius, 1794)   Note 7

Notes
Note 1 Again added by Meuffels (1970: 123).
Note 2 This species was not included in De Meijere list (1939b: 151) but simplicipes was included twice. Possibly one of the entries was supposed to be sulcata.
Note 3 Material examined: LIMBURG: Eijsden (Kerenshof, dung heap [GPS 50.76751N, 5.71049E], 1 m: 17.iv.2013, leg. P.L.Th. Beuk [NHMM ALC]).
Note 4 Generic status of Elaphropeza was first indicated by Collin (1961) and later adopted by, e.g., Shamshev & Grootaert (2007).
Note 5 Addition wrongly accredited to Grootaert & Meuffels (1984) by Beuk & Van der Goot (2002g: 168).
Note 6 De Meijere (1939b: 152) erroneously recorded P. fasciatus. De Meijere (1935: 204) clearly states that his previous records of cursitans should be referred to laticinctus but later (1939b: 152) cursitans is only mentioned as misidentification or synonym of fasciatus. De Meijere (1935: 204; 1939b: 152) referred older records of P. fasciatus to P. cursitans.
Note 7 This species is a synonym of pallidiventris. Both P. flavipes and P. pallidiventris are listed by De Meijere (1939b: 152). The identity of both species should be checked.
