FAMILY LONCHAEIDAE
Paul L.Th. Beuk and Herman de Jong Version date: 01-09-2024 17:03

Diagnosis. Small to medium-sized (3.0-6.0 mm) and squatty built, shining metallic bluish flies. Head large and hemispherical, lunule broadly exposed. Cell c wide. Halteres black in all species. Abdomen short and broad, flattened dorsoventrally. Female with rigid, piercing-type ovipositor.

Biology. Immature stages of most species live under bark of dead or dying trees or in decomposed wood. Some species of Lonchaeidae are associated with particular tree species. Other species develop in decaying organic material, galls on grasses, in onions, seeds of conifers, or fruits and vegetables.
