FAMILY ASILIDAE
Mark P. van Veen and Paul L.Th. Beuk Version date: 03-01-2023 18:24

Neoitamus cyanurus Loew, 1849 with prey (Lucilia spec.)
Diagnosis. Rather small to large (6-25 mm) flies. Head with large eyes; ocelli implanted on an elevation between the compound eyes; many species with distinct facial knob, covered with dense hairs; mouthparts chitinised, forming a cylindrical puncturing instrument for prey capture. Wings with a fully developed venation and a distinct discal cell. Thorax large. Legs strong. Abdomen coniform. Larvae are cylindrical, moving with the aid of setae.

Biology. The flies are visual predators and mostly catch insects in flight. Prey size varies considerably, from less than one tenth to somewhat larger than their own body size. Most species prefer dry habitats on sandy soils, either in woods or in open vegetation. Few prefer humid environments, like herbal vegetation on peat and clay. The larvae are predatory and mostly live in the soil. Larvae of the subfamily Laphriinae live in decaying wood.
