Diagnosis. Small (2.5-4 mm), dark-bodied flies, reminiscent of Drosophilidae but with infuscated wings. Head rounded; one proclinate and two reclinate orbital setae; vibrissae distinct; arista plumose. Thorax densely dusted; two pairs of distinct dorsocentral setae. Wing membrane distinctly infuscated, especially along anterior margin and often with clearer patch in the middle; C only with subcostal break and with several small spines among the customary setulae. Fore legs with anteroventral series of small spines. Descriptions of larval stages have been given but identification is not certain.
Biology. Adults are usually found in woodland with a preference for (but by no means restricted to) more humid types. There they are often swept from low vegetation. The larval stages are thought to live in rotten wood but adults have not been associated with this substrate. A saprophagous mode of life is presumed.
