FAMILY CHYROMYIDAE
Paul L.Th. Beuk Version date: 31-01-2020 10:02

Diagnosis. Very small to small (1.5-4.0 mm), yellowish flies. Head rounded; antennae small; upper orbital setae lateroclinate; vibrissae present by rather weak. Thorax somewhat flattened; dorsocentral setae strong; acrostichal setae small; pleura with strong setae on anepisternum and katepisternum. Wing membrane clear; costa with subcostal break; R with three branches; M unforked; anal vein not reaching wing margin. Legs simple and without strong setae; preapical dorsal setae on tibiae absent. Abdomen short and narrow though sometimes strongly swollen in gravid females.

Biology. Little is known about the immature stages. Adults have been reared from birds' nests and from wood debris. Adults are often found on windows and are frequently swept from foliage.

General references. Andersson (1971b [key]), Ebejer (2010 [Gymnochiromyia, most recent key]), Gibbs (2007 [Chyromya, most recent key]), J.F. McAlpine (1987h [general, key to genera]), Merz (1997 [key]), Wheeler (1998 [general, key to genera]).

References to the local fauna. No recent references.

Remarks. Species number in the world after Ebejer (2010).

Notes
Note 1 Additional material examined: LIMBURG: Maastricht (Natuurhistorisch Museum [1761-3172], indoors, 1 [f]: 26.vi.2014, leg. P.L.Th. Beuk [NHMM ALC]).
Note 2 Gibbs (2007) reviewed the British Chyromya species. He concluded that all British material recorded under the name flava that he could check belonged to femorellum (Fallén, 1823). Whether flava is a senior synonym of femorellum represented by smaller specimens or whether it is perhaps a rare or non-British species remains as yet unanswered. It may well be that the Dutch situation is similar. For now flava is maintained on the list until either or both species as described by Gibbs (2007) has/have been confirmed.
Note 3 Additional material examined: LIMBURG: Maastricht (Natuurhistorisch Museum [1761-3172], indoors, <<<1 [f]: 23.vii.2013, leg. P.L.Th. Beuk [NHMM ALC]>>>; 1 [f]: 26.vi.2014, leg. P.L.Th.
