FAMILY LAUXANIIDAE | Paul L.Th. Beuk |
Version date: 03-01-2023 18:31
|
|
Meiosimyza spec. |
Diagnosis. Small to medium-sized (2.0-6.0 mm), often rather plump flies. Body coloration ranging from yellow, brown, grey, or greenish-black, or combinations of these, sometimes with distinct pattern. Body surface dull or (partly) shining. Head dichoptic in both sexes; 2 usually reclinate orbital bristles, vibrissae absent, postvertical setae convergent to cruciate. Wing with costal vein unbroken, membrane clear, yellowish tinged, partly clouded or with distinct pattern. Preapical dorsal seta on tibiae present.
Biology. Larvae as far as known saprophagous, some are facultative miners of decaying leaves, while others develop in decaying material in birds-nests. Larvae apparently consume micro-organisms or fungi associated with decay. Adults of most species can be found in the undergrowth of shady places, like damp woods, banks of streams, marshes etc. Adults of Homoneura are a dapted to drier circumstances.

Note 1 |
Material examined: GELDERLAND: Rijswijk (1 [m], 1 [f]: 19.vi.1993, leg. P.L.Th. Beuk [BEUK]), det. P.L.Th. Beuk. |
Note 2 |
Previously recorded material under the name interstincta was presumed to belong to mediospinosa (= interstincta sensu auct.) (see Merz, 2003). Most of the checked material under interstincta indeed belonged to the new species or was refered to other species, but did not belong to the true interstincta. However, Beuk & Belgers (2017) examined recently collected material belonging to H. interstincta, so the species is maintained on the list. |
Note 3 |
The misinterpretation of H. notata by Papp (1978a) was pointed out by Merz (2003: 355). So far, recently confirmed material all belonged to H. subnotata which was shown to be a junior synonym of H. notata. Older material still needs to be checked to see whether H. dilecta (= H. notata sensu Papp, 1978) is indigenous or not. |
Note 4 |
Material examined: GELDERLAND: Kotten (1 [f]: 8-11.vi.1993, leg. C.J. Zwakhals MT [BEUK]); LIMBURG: Sint Pietersberg (1 [m]: 6.viii.1991, leg. B. van Aartsen MT [BEUK]; 1 [m]: 8.vii.1994, leg. B. van Aartsen [BEUK]), det. P.L.Th. Beuk. |

Note 7 |
Synonymy established and transferred from Sapromyza to Calliopum by Ebejer (2019: 42). |
Note 8 |
Merz (2004) revised the Minettia fasciata group and found that the true M. fasciata is actually the senior synonym of M. rivosa. Minettia fasciata sensu auct. should be named M. tabidiventris (Rondani, 1877). It appears this confusion arose with Collins publication on the British Lauxaniidae. Consequently, it seems probable that Dutch records before Collins publication may indeed belong to the true M. fasciata. The occurrence of Minettia tabidiventris has now been confirmed. |
Note 9 |
M. uncinata is apparently closely related to M. tubifer and preliminary research indicates that it may well be identical. Pending a future publication about the matter, M. uncinata is here provisionally placed as synonym of M. tubifer. |
Note 10 |
Papp & Shatalkin (1998) elevated the previous subgenera of Sapromyza to generic status on account of the genus being paraphyletic. However, their claim was not substantiated in that publication but many recent catalogues have followed this classification. |
Note 11 |
Material examined: GELDERLAND: Elburg (1 [m]: 30.vi.1992, leg. B. van Aartsen MT [AARTSEN]; 1 [m], 2 [f][f]: 30.vi.1992, leg. B. van Aartsen MT [BEUK]; 1 [m], 1 [f]: 30.vi.1992, leg. Papp & Shatalkin (1998) elevated the previous subgenera of Sapromyza to generic level on account of the genus being paraphyletic. However, their claim was not substantiated in that publication but many recent catalogues have follwed this classification. |
Note 12 |
Material examined: NOORD-BRABANT: Best (Achterste Broek, 1 [m]: 4.vi.1994, leg. P.L.Th. Beuk [BEUK]). |
Note 13 |
Separation of these two species is sometimes difficult because there appear to be intermediates in mixed populations. Both 'typical' forms were observed. Material examined: DRENTHE: Boswachterij Norg (1 [m]: 30.v.1992, leg. P.L.Th. Beuk [BEUK]); FRIESLAND: Rijs (1 [f]: 28.v.1981, leg. H.J. Prijs [BEUK]); GELDERLAND: Epe (1 [m]: 2.vi.1994, leg. B. van Aartsen MT [RMNH]), Rijswijk (1 [m]: 19.vi.1993, leg. P.L.Th. Beuk [BEUK]); LIMBURG: Thorn (1 [m]: 11.x.1993, leg. T. Peeters [RMNH]); NOORD-BRABANT (1 [m]: 5.vi.1994, leg. P.L.Th. Beuk [RMNH]); NOORD-HOLLAND: Haarlem (Engelandlaan, 11 [m]: 25.viii.1997, leg. P.L.Th. Beuk [BEUK]). |
Note 14 |
Chandler (1998a: 129) notes this is a homonym or synonym of Sylvia apicalis Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 with Sylvia being preoccupied and without valid type-species designation. |
Note 15 |
Material examined: GELDERLAND: Kotten (1 [f]: 8-11.vi.1993, leg. C.J. Zwakhals MT [BEUK]), det. P.L.Th. Beuk. |
Note 16 |
To confirm the conspecificy of Meiosimyza obtusa with M. mihalyii Papp, 1978, the specimen recorded by H. de Jong & Beuk (2002b: ZUID-HOLLAND: Noordwijk (1 [m]: 14-30.v.1993, leg. E.J. van Nieukerken [BEUK]), det. P.L.Th. Beuk) was checked. It turned out this specimen actually belonged to S. obsoleta, a species of Sapromyza with a smaller presutural dorsocentral setae. A pair of presutural dorsocentral setae is normally indicative of Meiosimyza and similar genera and is usually absent in Sapromyza. |
Note 17 |
Material examined: GELDERLAND: 't Harde (1 [m]: 14.vi.1989, leg. B. van Aartsen [BEUK]), det. P.L.Th. Beuk. |
Note 18 |
This species represents a species of Homoneura but it's identity has not yet been established. |
Note 19 |
Erroneously recorded as obtusa by H. de Jong & Beuk (2002b) but identification corrected by Beuk & Belgers (2017). |
