FAMILY ODINIIDAE
Jan Willem A. van Zuijlen and Paul L.Th. Beuk Version date: 02-02-2022 14:36

Diagnosis. Small (2.0-5.0 mm), compact-bodied flies with strong cephalic and thoracic setae; body usually grey with dark markings, dark only in some species. Head with strong vibrissae; three pairs of orbital setae; postocellar setae divergent. Wings in most species with small dark markings; C with subcostal break; Sc short, not reaching C. Tibiae with dorsal preapical setae.

Biology. Adults are mainly found near the microhabitats or over the breeding media of their larvae. They are commonly found on wood-destroying fungi and around moist wounds of trees. The larvae usually live in association with wood-boring insects on deciduous and coniferous trees, under the bark and in the wood of rotten logs, as predators.

General references. Collin (1952 [key]), Krivosheina (1981 [systematics, biology], 1984 [catalogue]), J.F. McAlpine (1987e [general]), Papp (1998c [general, keys]).

References to the local fauna. Collin (1952), De Meijere (1907, 1935), Van Zuijlen (1996f).

Remarks. Original data by Van Zuijlen, corrections and updates (publication years marked in red) by Beuk.
