FAMILY PIPUNCULIDAE
Marc De Meyer and Paul L.Th. Beuk Version date: 16-03-2021 10:48

Pipunculus spec.
Diagnosis. Small to medium-sized (2.0-8.0 mm) flies, closely related to hoverflies (Syrphidae) but can be differentiated by the large compound eyes occupying most of the surface of the (sub)hemispherical head. Wings long and usually rather narrow; discal cell present and closed; M1+2 reaching wing margin. Female ovipositor modified into a piercer.

Biology. During the larval stage they are parasitoids of Homoptera, Auchenorrhyncha. They attack the nymphal and/or adult stages. The female deposits the eggs singly, within the host's haemocoel, by means of the piercing ovipositor. Two larval instars are known during the development. When the larva reaches maturity, it emerges through a break in one of the intersegmental membranes and leaves the host. The adults can be found in almost every conceivable terrestrial habitat worldwide. Most commonly they seem to be found among low vegetation or foliage of shrubs and trees. The phenomenon of hill-topping has been recorded from several regions but not yet observed in Europe.

Notes
Note 1 Again added as holosericeus by Van der Goot (1961b: 113).
Note 2 Synonymy pointed out by Kehlmaier & Assmann (2008: 23).
Note 3 Synonymy established by Kehlmaier (2006: 9).
Note 4 Again added by Theowald (1954a: 30).
Note 5 Again added by Van der Goot & Lucas (1966: 140).
Note 6 Synonymy pointed out by Kehlmaier (2008: 4).
Note 7 Old records proved to erroneous. However, recent material at ZMAN was examined from Geulle, Bunderbos and Tongeren.
Note 8 Transferred from Eudorylas to Clistoabdominalis by Kozánek & Kehlmaier (2004).
Note 9 Misidentification pointed out by Kehlmaier (2005).
Note 10 Again added as ater by Van der Goot (1961b: 114).
Note 11 Misidentification pointed out by Kehlmaier (2008: 14).
Note 12 Misidentification pointed out by Kehlmaier (2008: 17).
Note 13 Synonymy pointed out by Kehlmaier (2008: 20). Moreover, he states that the Netherlands seem to been outside the expected range of this species but might represent an isolated population.
Note 14 Based on molecular evidence Kehlmaier (2008: 21) argued that hertzogi is a Nearctic species, despite its morphological similarity with omissinervis.
Note 15 Misidentification pointed out by Kehlmaier (2008: 26).
