Diagnosis. Minute to small (1.0-5.0 mm) flies; body black, occasionally with small yellowish or whitish parts, sometime largely brownish to reddish in Apiloscatopse. Head small, compound eyes reniform, eye bridge present in almost all species; antennae with up to 12 rather short segments. Thorax somewhat arched, without strong setae, in Aspistes with collar of thorn-like projections. Wings often glass-like; C, Sc, R and base of M well developed, remaining veins poorly developed; M with two branches, anterior branch sometimes with a partial or complete cross vein towards R4+5; some veins or posterior cells sometimes with scattered macrotrichia. Legs short, without setae. Abdomen short.
Biology. Larvae have been associated with all kinds of decaying vegetable matter. Scatopse notata and Coboldia fuscipes have been reared from a wide variety of substrates; Ectaetia has been reared from and collected near rot holes in trees; Rhexoza has been reared from under bark on dead trees; and Aspistes has been reared from litter sifted from sandy soil. Adults can be numerous at sites of emergence, near substrates for oviposition, or near food supplies (flower heads); Apiloscatopse adults have been found to aggregate.
