FAMILY SYRPHIDAE
Wouter van Steenis, Aat Barendregt and Paul L.Th. Beuk Version date: 08-11-2024 11:09

Helophilus pendulus (Linnaeus, 1758)
Diagnosis. Small to very large (3.5-23.0 mm) flies, ranging in build from extremely slender to quite broad. Head big mostly consisting of compound eyes, without any distinct setae. Thorax with very few setae. Wings with vena spuria (except in Eristalinus sepulchralis and Psilota anthracina), well developed anal cell, two outer cross-veins near the wing margin. Body colour may range from conspicuously coloured (black and yellow wasp-mimics) to uniformly brilliant green or dull blackish with many intermediate patterns including other colours (white, red, etc.), or body may be hairy (bee- or bumblebee mimics). Larvae of different species may be quite different, best known are the rat-tailed larvae of Eristalinae. Others may have the general appearance of, e.g., caterpillars (Syrphinae) or larvae of Tipulidae.

Biology. Most syrphid flies are sun loving flower visitors in gardens, meadows, forest edges or riversides. Other species live in the canopy. Males and females of most species are frequently feeding on nectar and pollen. The males display different kinds of courtship behaviour like hovering in free air, hovering above a female or guarding a site from leaves. Some species are mimics of bees, bumblebees and wasps, not only in appearance but also in behaviour. Some species only have one generation a year, other species have two or more generations a year. Episyrphus balteatus, Eristalis tenax and Eupeodes corollae are amongst the most numerous migrating insects. Especially E. balteatus invades the Netherlands with millions of specimen each year. The larvae may be predators on aphids (Syrphinae), bacteriophages in rotting wood (Xylotini, Criorhina), filter-feeders in water (Eristalinae [frequently used in water management surveys], most Chrysogastrinae), saprophages or bacteriophages in sap runs on trees (Brachyopa, Volucella inflata), commensals or predators in nests of wasps, bees and ants (remaining Volucella, Microdon), or phytophagous (Cheilosia).

Notes
Note 1 According to F.C. Thompson et al. (1982: 151) E. nemorum and E. horticola are synonyms of E. arbustorum. The first available name for the species until now known as E. horticola would be E. lineata, the first available name for the species until now known as E. nemorum would be E. interrupta. Several recent authors use the name interrupta but refrain from using the name lineata because that name has never been used.
Note 2 Again added as rupium by Van Doesburg Sr (1953: 244).
Note 3 The species interpretation of Nielsen (1995) is adopted, following Reemer et al. (2009).
Note 4 Formally added by Van Aartsen (1993: 6).
Note 5 Misidentifications pointed out by Van Doesburg Sr (1951: 275) and Van der Goot (1956: 36).
Note 6 Formally added as coeruleiventris by Van Aartsen (1993: 7). The misidentification of Dutch specimens was pointed out by Reemer et al. (2009).
Note 7 Formally added by J.T. Smit et al. (2001b: 125).
Note 8 Again added by Hogendijk (1961: 57).
Note 9 Again added by Van Aartsen (1993: 6).
Note 10 The record by Peck (1988: 100) must have been based on earlier Dutch literature. However, Van Aartsen (1993) received a personal communication by Van der Goot, stating that all previous records were based on misidentifications and he records the species as new to the Dutch list.
Note 11 Formally added by J.T. Smit et al. (2001b: 131).
Note 12 Formally added by J.T. Smit et al. (2001b: 134).
Note 13 For some time the identity of the recorded specimens was not clear. Reemer & Renema (2004) concluded they belong to C. proxima.
Note 14 Formally added by J.T. Smit et al. (2001b: 135).
Note 15 Formally added as soror by J.T. Smit et al. (2001b: 136).
Note 16 Again added as rotundiventris by Van der Goot (1979a: 113) and as ruficollis by Van der Goot (1979a: 114). Both species wer synonymised with vernalis by Ståhls et al. (2008). Reemer et al. (2009 erroneously attribute the synonymisation of rotundiventis with vernalis to Barkalov (1993) but he synonymised rotundicornis (Hellén, 1914) with vernalis.
Note 17 Identification corrected by Barendregt (1985: 11).
Note 18 Identification corrected by Van der Goot (1972: 59).
Note 19 The species interpretation of F.C. Thompson et al. (1982) is adopted, following Reemer et al. (2009).
Note 20 Again added by Van Aartsen (1997: 8).
Note 21 Maibach et al. (1994) clarify the status of several Melanogaster species. They reinstate M. aerosa as valid species. All Dutch material previously recorded as M. macquarti belongs to M. aerosa, but the name aerosa was not used before Barendregt (2001).
Note 22 Since the species interpretation of viduata for Pipizella varipes by F.C. Thompson et al. (1982) is adopted (following Reemer et al. , 2009) nuda becomes the first available name.
Note 23 Again by Meuffels & Maassen (1965: 78).
Note 24 Identification corrected by Van der Goot (1972: 61).
Note 25 The species interpretation of Speight et al. (1998) is adopted, following Reemer et al. (2009).
Note 26 Full authorship of the species should be accredited to Schönrogge, Barr, Wardlaw, Napper, Gardner, Breen, Elmes & Thomas.
Note 27 Again added as meigeni by Verhaak (1972: 37), but the specimen recorded by Verhaak (l.c.) could not be traced (pers. comm. J. van der Linden). The synonymy of meigeni as suggested by Speight (2004) is followed here.
Note 28 Formally added by Renema (2001: 111).
Note 29 According to F.C. Thompson et al. (1982: 154) the correct name of the species currently known as C. femoratus should be C. valgus (Gmelin, 1790); the correct name of the species currently known as C. curvipes should be C. femoratus. The use of the name femoratus is avoided altogether to prevent confusion following Reemer et al. (2009).
Note 30 According to F.C. Thompson et al. (1982: 154) the correct name of the species currently known as C. femoratus should be C. valgus (Gmelin, 1790); the correct name of the species currently known as C. curvipes should be C. femoratus.
Note 31 Identification corrected by Barendregt et al. (2000: 41, 44).
Note 32 The synonym of B. obscuripennis with elongata was already hinted at by Van der Goot, 1982b but has since been formalised.
Note 33 According to Vockeroth (1990) Pachysphyria and Pyrophaena are synonyms of Platycheirus and cannot be reliably separated as groups from other Platycheirus when the Holarctic fauna is considered as a whole.
Note 34 Formally added by J.T. Smit (2001a: 141).
Note 35 The occurrence could not be confirmed since the material seems to be lost (pers. comm. J.A.W. Lucas).
Note 36 Again added menthastri var. dubia by Theowald (1952d: 131) and as sarmatica by Lucas (1969: 138). It is not clear whether this is the same species as previously listed under the name menthastri var. philanthus by De Meijere (1939b: 155).
Note 37 According to the files kept by Van der Goot (now at ZMAN), the first record of this species was as dubia (sensu Bankowska) by Lucas (1969: 138).
Note 38 The confusion about the identity of the specimens recorded either as bicolor or as finitimus was cleared by Reemer & Renema (2004) who deleted P. finitimus from the Dutch list.
Note 39 Misinterpretation of majoranae pointed out by Sommaggio([2002).
Note 40 Identification as albifrons corrected to majoranae by Lucas (1981: 50).
Note 41 Again added as dubium by Van Doesburg Sr (1946: xxxi).
Note 42 The status of this species had been unclear until Barendregt & Zeegers (2005) determined its status as a valid species using the then current name fenestrata. Later, Vujić et al. (2013b: 296) concluded that the correct name of fenestrata sensu auct. should be fasciata.
Note 43 The status of this species had been unclear until Barendregt & Zeegers (2005) determined that virtually all previously recorded material belongs to P. fenestrata and they do not include P. signata in their overview of Dutch species.
Note 44 Usage of the name as proposed by Vujić et al. (2013b: 300).
Note 45 Pipizella maculipennis was deleted from the Dutch list by Lucas (1981: 50) but he did not specify to which species the misidentified material belonged.
Note 46 Van der Goot (1971: 106) could not confirm older records of carbonaria sensu auct. He later (Van der Goot, 1979a: 114) associated a female from Eesveen (7.vii.1971, coll. FNM) with this name. Goeldlin de Tiefenau (1997: 197) indicated that the species mentioned by Van der Goot might be the same as his T. joratensis.
Note 47 F.C. Thompson et al. (1982: 151) examined material in the Linnaean collection. They argued that the correct name of the species then known as Chrysotoxum arcuatum should be C. fasciatum (Müller, 1764); that of C. festivum should be C. arcuatum and that of Xanthogramma citrofasciatum should be X. festivum. However, the International Commission for Zoological Nomenclature (2001: 241) decided that this upset nomenclature too much. The traditional use of these names was fixed by the designation of neotypes.
Note 48 Formally added by J.T. Smit et al. (2001a: 117).
Note 49 Formally added by J.T. Smit et al. (2001a: 118).
Note 50 Again added by Van der Goot et al. (1961: 66) and by Meuffels (1967: 29). The status of D. friuliensis, D. venustus and D. hilaris is presently still under study. Until the results are published we maintain the present the species on the list in their present concepts.
Note 51 Again added by Van der Goot et al. (1961: 66) and by Meuffels (1967: 29).
Note 52 In publications before 1953 Dutch authors used Syrphus arcuatus for Eupeodes lapponicus (Van Doesburg Sr, 1953: 243).
Note 53 Identification corrected by Doczkal & Schmid (1994: 15).
Note 54 Generic placement following Reemer et al. (2009).
Note 55 Again added as punctifer by Van Aartsen (1971: 49). Identification finally corrected by Lucas (1981: 49).
Note 56 Identification corrected by Van Doesburg Sr (1953: 243).
Note 57 The status of M. compositarum and M. labiatarum is still unclear. Until this is further investigated both species are maintained on the Dutch list. The first mention of possible occurrence in the Netherlands was made by Van Doesburg Sr (1949a: v) but the labelling of the material he examined was questioned.
Note 58 The specimens of M. ericarum from the Netherlands very much resemble dark specimens of M. umbellatarum. Too many differences with typical M. ericarum was reason for Reemer & Renema (2004) to delete the species from the Dutch list.
Note 59 The status of X. pedissequum is presently still under study. Until the results are published we maintain the present the species on the list in their present concepts.
Note 60 Though this definitely represents a valid species, it appears to be a member of a compex of species and at present it is not yet known whether griseiventris is the correct name for this species.
Note 61 Deleted by Van der Goot (1986c: 32).
