FAMILY THEREVIDAE
Volkert S. van der Goot and Paul L.Th. Beuk Version date: 31-01-2020 09:40

Diagnosis. Small to large (6.0-14.0 mm) flies with strong build; many species strongly setose. Head with orthorrhaphous antennae consisting of three large segments; frons of female in many species with glossy black markings. Wing membrane generally hyaline. Legs slender and with hairs and short setae. Abdomen gradually tapering towards genitalia, conical in male, more oval-shaped in female. Larvae elongate and cylindrical, narrowing anteriorly and posteriorly, rather hard-bodied.

Biology. Larvae live in soil or dead wood and predacious on other insects (often larvae). Soil may range from very dry (Acrosathe, Thereva) to probably humid (Cliorisma, Pandivirilia). Adults usually are found on leafs (Thereva) or bare soils (Acrosathe, Dialineura).

General references. Van der Goot (1985c [key]), M.E. Irwin & Lyneborg (1981 [general]), Lyneborg (1989 [catalogue]), Majer (1997b [general, key to genera]).

References to the local fauna. Van der Goot (1963, 1982a, 1985c), Theowald (1952d).
